He glanced at his neighbor, Mrs. Bell’s, house. The once-modest building was now undergoing a major renovation. Trucks rumbled, workers scurried. He’d always thought Mrs. Bell was a widow, struggling to make ends meet. He’d seen her diligently tending her small garden.

Now, a team of architects buzzed around her house. Expensive materials were being delivered. He saw the woman, in her garden, now wearing a different outfit, directing the work with a distant smile. Michael felt a sudden wave of nausea. He turned away, the feeling of the heavy, endless strain of life pressing down on him.
